I love to shop. There, I said it. I do, I love to shop.
I love looking at new styles, new colors and dreaming of all the cool places I need to go, just so that I can wear my new stuff! I feel the same way about home goods. I love finding new and different pieces that turn my house into a home. It’s a creative outlet that allows me to showcase my personality.
That being said, I am a stay at home mom, so my family lives on a single income. I need to be smart and strategic with my spending. Notice, I didn’t say cheap. You can find really nice, quality pieces if you know what you are looking for and where to look. I will admit there are certain things that you actually should splurge on, but we’ll save that for another post!
I love all magazines, catalogs and fashion blogs. I love to look at the pictures and get ideas. I love to window shop and walk through higher-end stores like Anthropolgie and Nordstrom. I see what trends and colors are hot, and then, I get to work.
If I see something I like or “need to have,” I begin the hunt of finding it for less. And I am not always out looking for one thing, I am often out looking for MANY things! Of course, I have my go-to places like Target, TJ Maxx/Marshalls, Homegoods or The Christmas Tree Shop. But I do not discriminate and will look anywhere! Sometimes you find the best deals in places you would least expect.
Take this necklace for example:
I recently saw this Alexis Bittar necklace in the Nordstrom catalog and loved it; except for the fact that it was $245. Remember my smart and strategic spending? This necklace would not be considered a smart or strategic purchase for me. It’s not something I could wear every day or all that often for that matter, but man it’s pretty awesome! I love big statement necklaces, I love gold and I love the edgy, funky look of it. But, I couldn’t spend almost $300. I figured I would keep my eye out for a cheaper alternative; I’d add it to the list of things I love, but need to find for less!
Fast forward a few weeks to when I was outlet shopping with one of the PGG girls. We both always have a mental list of things we are “hunting” for. I don’t even remember what we were actually in search of when we happened upon THE necklace.
We had randomly walked into a store we had never heard of called Rue 21. Upon entering, we immediately realized we were about 20 years older than the demographic, but we continued to walk around anyway! And then we spotted this:
I mean, come on, it’s pretty darn similar right?!
You know what’s not similar? The price! It was, ready for this…..$4.99! I’m not even kidding. Is it as good quality as Alexis Bittar, of COURSE not!
But, does it look cool, edgy and funky when I occasionally wear it? You bet it does!
So, the moral of the story is: never say never. You may think something you want is out of your budget, but keep looking. You never know where you might find something similar, or that you like even better, for less!
